Open to freshman only. This is a freshman seminar.Historical consciousness course (H). This course explores twentieth century social change and social criticism in the non-western and western worlds. Topics for seminar readings, research, and presentations include aspects of modern imperialism, nationalism, racism, resistance, and intellectual change. The course focuses closely on the movements of Gandhi in colonial India, Martin Luther King in the American south, and Nelson Mandela in South Africa and how these leaders pursued political change, economic reform and social justice, especially through non-violent activism.Faculty: R.
