This course introduces students to geographic information systems (GIS), a critical tool for professionals working with spatial data and information, through hands-on training with widely used software platforms. The course is designed for students who aspire to careers in GIS and for those who use GIS as a tool in their professional work. It covers GIS principles and concepts, exemplary applications, geodatabase development and management, data analysis and manipulation, problem-solving strategies, and GIS modeling. Students gain experience in planning customized GIS projects and applying spatial data to solve real-world problems. By the end of the course, students understand what GIS is, what it can do, and how to use it effectively in research and applied contexts.
