Ecological Economics is an interdisciplinary field of research that integrates the study and management of human economies and natural ecosystems over time and space. The field treats the economy as a subsystem of the ecosystem and places heavy emphasis on preserving natural capital via sustainable practices and policies. The field is generally critical of the notion that natural and human-made capital are substitutable.
