BORDERS AND DISPLACEMENT

Catalog description

Cross listed MAHG 5521. Students will examine the creation of territories and nation-states to be defended as "homeland". This course will require to explore theoretical frameworks underpinning historical and contemporary nation-state building, human security, immigration, refugees and asylum policy, displacement, citizenship, securitization, and establishment of borders. Students will critically examine the roles of enforcement agents, and how state authorities and societies create different identities in response to the establishment of borders. Borders will also be examined as physical, emotional, and environmental entities, and students will compare how communities respond to and cope with creation of borders. The course will illustrate key concepts by focusing on a number of case studies, including the United States, Israel/Palestine, and Northern Ireland.
