Catalog description

Prerequisite: Baccalaureate degree from accredited institution.This course examines the many types of mental disorders with specific emphasis on their impact on the criminal justice system and their corresponding treatment options. Practical considerations will be given to the etiology, manifestations, and dynamics involved in maladaptive and abnormal behaviors that are most often seen by police, courts, and corrections, as well as suffered by criminal lawyers, police and corrections officers. Students will explore available treatments for people with mental illness and their unique challenges. It will also address the unique legal and ethical challenges that mental health service providers tackle on a regular basis to form effective helping relationships.
