Introduction to medicinal chemistry, pharmacophores, bioisosteres, lead modification, Lipinski's rule of five and bioavailability, rational drug design, phase I and phase II metabolic pathways, quantitative structure-activity relationship studies, physico-chemical parameters, Hansch equation and Topliss decision tree; Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, ADMET, drug action at enzymes and receptors, prodrugs, soft drugs, drug toxicity and detoxification, blood-brain barrier; Applications in biomedical engineering (polymers, dendrimers, foldamers, hydrogels, nanotechnology); Selected accounts of medicinal plants used in complementary and alternative medicine, their bioactivity and challenges.
