COMMUNITY GARDENS: HEALING OF HORTICULTURE

Community gardens have been in existence in the United States since the 1700’s. In the last seventy-five years, the concept of community gardens has continued to expand, from World War II victory gardens to the urban revitalization efforts of the late twentieth century and now to the promotion of healing, meditation and therapy in our own decade. This course will examine how community gardens continue to play a vital role in bringing neighborhoods together through discussions on the history, economic benefits, politics, medicinal uses, and the aesthetic, ethnic and social benefits of community gardens. The class will include the planning, design, and construction of a community garden.Faculty:STAFF
