Crosslisted HIST 2203. Material culture is the study of artifacts to illuminate a society or community's beliefs, values, and assumptions. An understanding of materiality informs the study of anthropology and archaeology, and supplements the textual sources in history, as well as museum studies. This course examines the meaning of artifacts and other 3-dimensional objects such as landscapes and buildings as primary evidence about societies and cultures, past and present.
