Catalog description

Prerequisite: Open to graduate students and qualified undergraduates (those who have completed a minimum of 96 undergraduate credits with an overall GPA of at least 3.2). Qualified undergraduates must contact the Office of Graduate Studies for the required permission form.This course examines significant topics in contemporary Native North American Indian literature, including national and individual identity, revision of stereotypes, resistance to colonialism, tribal sovereignty, and the preservation and expression of traditional values and beliefs in relation to land, family, ceremony and story. In addition to careful consideration of the form, language, and imagery of the texts, we will be exploring their cultural and historical contexts and discussing the importance of context in the study of literature.
