IDENTITY NARRATIVES IN BLACK CULTURE

Catalog description

Prerequisite: Open to graduate students and qualified undergraduates (those who have completed a minimum of 96 undergraduate credits with an overall GPA of at least 3.2). Qualified undergraduates must contact the School of Graduate Studies for the required permission form. This course examines the complexity of African American identity as revealed in visual, literary and historical studies. The readings are concerned with portrayals of their physical, social and cultural selves at various moments in American history. In spite of significant differences observed across geography and social class, shared sensibilities and cultural practices within African American communities reflect critical aspects of a shared history from enslavement to the present day.
