S-Term: From Economic Development to Rivalry: Exploring China's Rise and the US Response

Catalog description

This course explores what many have termed the "economic rivalry" between the US and China. Of particular interest are the regulatory framework and economic conditions underpinning China's innovation engine. We will examine the policies of the Chinese central government regarding industrial and economic development and how those policies have been translated into actual innovation by private companies. We will also explore the US response to China's development. Most of the course will take place in China, including some classroom time, visits to Chinese companies at the cutting edge of innovation, and meetings with policy analysts who can offer a broad view from the Chinese perspective. Assessment. Reflection papers will be required integrating the classroom work, meetings and any additional reading you choose to do. Grading will be mandatory pass.
