Literature and Society in Africa and the Caribbean

Catalog description

This course explores contemporary works from Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and the Caribbean while considering their engagement with the historical and political contexts in which they were produced. This course also develops students' speaking, writing and critical thinking skills while strengthening their understanding of the linguistic and conceptual tools needed to conduct literary analysis. The genres and forms explored include novels, epics, poetry, comics, films, essays, short stories, and autobiography. Topics will include colonialism and decolonization, gender and sexuality, transnationalism and migration, history and memory, the politics of literature and the work of culture. Taught in French.
