Neoliberal Entanglements: Polycrisis in Contemporary Cinema from Spain

Engaging recent political philosophy and contemporary cinema from Spain, this seminar takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of 'crisis' and 'post-crisis' cultures from 2008 to the present. While focused on twenty-first-century Spain, we will address theoretical approaches that illuminate the after-effects of the Great Recession in other geopolitical contexts such as Latin America. Reading Lauren Berlant, David Harvey, Achille Mbembe, Silvia Federici, and Nancy Fraser, we will track neoliberal entanglements that extend beyond the economic sphere and into other, supposedly discrete, sectors of the societal order. We will also examine the complexities of what Edgar Morin and Anne Brigitte Kern have termed "polycrisis" to reflect upon a series of overlapping predicaments in the historical present." Taught in English with films available in Spanish only. This course will meet from 2-5pm Apr. 14, 16, 18, 21, 23 with guest lecturer, Professor Bryan Cameron (University of Cambridge), additional meetings will be scheduled for film screenings.
