Catalog description

The course will focus on Lazarillo de Tormes, Cervantes' Novelas ejemplares, which can be read either as 12 or 13 short stories that breach their boundaries or as a single experimental novel, some lyrical poetry (Petrarchan garcilacismo and herrerismo vs. some formally and ideologically subversive verse: Cristóbal de Castillejo, Baltazar del Alcazar, the Argensola Brothers, Quevedo, and Gongora, finally two plays (Lope de Vega's and Calderon de la Barca's El Alcalde de Zalamea back to back and then side by side). Taught in English and Spanish.
