Catalog description

The course is an overview of select Spanish, Basque, Portuguese and Catalan films from the 1950s to the 21st century. We will consider the filmmakers' strategies to bypass censorship, the difficulty of recollection after trauma, how cinematic images can invoke the past through the exploration of subjectivity, and the representation of problems such as violence against women, the ravages of politically correct condemnation, or the drama of rural communities under globalization. Films by José Luis Garcia Berlanga, Luis Bunuel, Víctor Erice, Carlos Saura, Pedro Almodovar, Alejandro Amenabar, Miguel Gomes, Julio Medem, Ventura Pons, Bigas Luna, Iciar Bolain, Agusti Villaronga and Carla Simo.
