Rewriting Africa: History, Culture, and the Power of Imagination in Postcolonial Africa

Catalog description

This course centers African voices and lived experiences to rethink postcolonial Africa. Students analyze speeches, literature, film, music, and visual culture as primary sources reflecting and shaping social, political, and cultural change. Topics include anticolonial movements, nation-building, youth culture, protest, and Afrofuturism. Emphasizing culture as both expression and intervention, the course builds critical skills to examine how history is constructed, whose stories are told, and how creative works shape Africa's past, present, and futures.
