GEN 7919
Living, Dying, and Surviving in a Medieval European City
Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
This course examines medieval European cities from the perspective of the people who lived in them. Each week approaches medieval urban history from a new analytical perspective: we will examine the city through its social dynamics, its liturgical and civic rituals, its sights and sounds, its crises and disasters, and more. Students will come to see medieval urbanization as a complex phenomenon for which there is no one "correct" analytical lens, framework, or methodology.
