Want to learn about Germany's (in)famous fairytales, political plays, sentimental accounts, and horror stories? This course offers an introduction to the variety of German literature from 1700-1900 in the midst of major historical events such as the Enlightenment, the French revolution, and the invention and struggles of nation states. From Goethe to Heine, the Brothers Grimm to Fontane, Mereau to Kleist - we will meet them all and explore the historical and cultural connections of these turbulent texts that have shaped storytelling in Europe up until today. Knowledge of German will be helpful, but all texts will also be provided in English translation.
