Fairy Tales

Catalog description

This course examines fairy tales as narratives of identity formation. Fairy tales teach us how to behave, desire, fear, and belong. We will look at the original tales by the Grimm Brothers (The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, etc.), later versions of their famous stories, as well as contemporary fairy tales, including film (e.g., Pan's Labyrinth, Maleficent, Wicked) to expose the enduring relevance of this genre. As the creative assignment in this class, students will have the opportunity to create their own fairy tales, using various media. Students who are German minors or majors may participate in a separate section in German and enroll in four units. All other students should enroll in three units.
