How do we understand the mutual constitution of power, domination, and "the environment"? This graduate seminar offers a critical cut through environmental anthropology, engaging paradigmatic ethnographic sites - the plantation, the mine, the forest, the city, the fallout zone - and those who make and inhabit them. Drawing on debates within and beyond the discipline, we will work through key concepts and conversations, including labor and extraction, "nature," toxicity and embodiment, inter- and multi-species ethnography, the politics of environmental knowledge, and remediation and repair.
