The Chinese Economy and Financial Markets

Since the early 1990s, China's financial markets have been growing at an astonishing speed, along with its unprecedented economic growth in the past three decades. Beijing has been pushing forward China's liberalization process and integration with the rest of the world, especially on the frontier of financial markets, though since 2018 it seems that China has reached the crossroad, facing significant geopolitical risks and domestic economic growth pressure. This course aims to provide an in-depth coverage of China's financial markets and their reform processes post 1990's, including but not restricted to -SOE reform and growth model in early years; -Banking system; -Financial markets include stock market and bond market; -Housing and real estate market; -International trade status and exchange rate policy; -China's new growth engine, if any; -U.S.-China relations and recent policy shift. The course coverage will be through lectures, reading of research, including primary source documents and secondary (journalistic and analyst) commentary. There will be a range of subject-matter-expert speakers, and active class participation is expected. Evaluations will be based on case presentations and term papers on the most recent events. Only graduate students and undergraduate senior students are allowed.
