Catalog description
Graduate seminar focused on the theory and practice of cinematic montage. Formal, stylistic, epistemological, and political functions of editing will be considered in a range of film-historical contexts, including invention of the movies, development of the continuity system, Soviet Montage, post-WW2 New Waves, experimental cinema in the U.S., and more. Sergei Eisenstein, Cauleen Smith, Jean-Luc Godard, Maya Deren, and Eduardo Williams, are some fo the filmmakers whose work will be studied.
