Catalog description

Historically, trans scholarship has been relegated to the margins of Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies - reduced to a minor subdiscipline, an afterthought, or even an antagonist for feminist theory. This course asks how we might understand feminism, gender, and sexuality differently if we start from trans perspectives. Students will not only gain an introduction to trans studies, but will learn how trans scholarship rethinks the big-picture questions of Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. What might trans studies teach us about patriarchy and cisheteronormativity? We will take a global perspective on trans studies, foregrounding theorists, writers, and artists from the Global South.
