Catalog description

This course takes the runaway hit television sensation Heated Rivalry as an entry into broader conversations around gender, sexuality, sports, and popular culture in the 21st century. How can we contextualize the 'overnight' success of this show within a longer history of contestations over representation, cultural production, and shifting norms around gender and sexuality? Students will be introduced to frameworks from media studies and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies and engage with scholarly literature on masculinities, digital fandoms, the romance genre, queer media and spectatorship, and gender and athletics.
