Catalog description

This course examines the construction and representations of gender and sexuality in Indian popular cinema, tracing its evolution from early Hindi cinema to contemporary Bollywood films. Through critical analysis of iconic movies, we explore how cinematic narratives have both reflected and shaped societal norms around masculinity, femininity, queerness, transness, and other fluid identities that defy easy categorization. Weekly film screenings and discussions paired with critical literature provide a foundation for exploring how gender and sexuality are performed, contested, and negotiated on screen
