This critical creative seminar explores the rich tradition of Southern literature, examining how writers from the American South have shaped thought about identity, race, family, history, and place. Through short stories, poetry, and essays, students will analyze many Southern voices and consider how themes such as memory, religion, class, and social change reflect the region's complex cultural landscape. Students will also engage with the tradition through their own stories, essays, and poems. The course emphasizes close reading, writing, discussion, and the historical contexts that continue to influence Southern writing today.
