Regional Anesthesia Clerkship

VISITING: Open to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Elective. DESCRIPTION: An introduction to regional anesthesia for the adult patient for both the perioperative setting and the management of acute pain. Regional anesthesia refers to techniques that anesthetize a specific area of the body by means of injecting medications near a cluster of nerves. It is commonly used to provide anesthesia or analgesia (pain relief) for surgical procedures. It is also used to provide pain relief for acute pain conditions (e.g. bone fractures). Students will observe and participate in different nerve block procedures (epidural, spinal, and peripheral nerve blocks) with residents, fellows, nurse practitioners, and faculty. Students will also participate in seeing inpatient consults. On this rotation, students will learn the relevant anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology principles that are used daily by regional anesthesiologists. PERIODS AVAILABLE: 1A-1B, 3B-12B, full time for 2 weeks, 1 student per period.
