Emergency Medical Responder & EMT Part I

EMED 111A is the first part of the two-quarter Stanford EMT Program (EMED 111A/B), providing the foundational knowledge and skills to manage medical emergencies until advanced responders arrive. Through lectures and hands-on sessions, students learn prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages across a range of medical and traumatic conditions. Topics include prehospital care systems, anatomy and physiology, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, medical emergencies, and trauma care. EMED 111A qualifies students to take the NREMT Emergency Medical Responder exam and is a prerequisite for EMED 111B (offered Winter/Spring). Students will receive a CPR for healthcare professionals certification as part of the course. In addition to in-person classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, two weekend practical sessions are required. Dates for these sessions will be announced in Week 1. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to apply. This program requires a substantial time commitment; students should carefully assess their availability before applying and be prepared to prioritize this program throughout the quarter.
