Introduction to Printing and Type Design

This course explores the intertwined practices of printing and type design as both creative and communal endeavors. Students will learn the foundations of letterpress and risograph printing, gaining hands-on experience in preparing files, setting type, and producing prints ranging from posters to zines. At the same time, the course introduces the principles of type design, with an emphasis on both Latin and Global Scripts. Through workshops, critiques, and collaborative projects, students will investigate how tools, substrates, and design choices shape letterforms and printed matter alike. By the end of the quarter, students will have both practical skills in operating a community printshop and a working prototype of their own typeface, situating their work within broader conversations about visual communication and cultural expression.
