VISITING: Open to visitors. TYPE OF CLERKSHIP: Elective. DESCRIPTION: A pediatric dermatology advanced clerkship for medical students interested in pursuing dermatology residency training, with a specific focus on the diagnosis, management, and longitudinal care of skin diseases in infants, children, and adolescents. Students participate in a four-week pediatric dermatology clinical experience based primarily at the Pediatric Dermatology Clinics at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (730 Welch Road, 1st Floor, Palo Alto, CA 94304; 1195 West Fremont Avenue, 1st Floor, Sunnyvale, CA 94087; 14601 S. Bascom Avenue, Suite 200, Los Gatos, CA 95032), with exposure to both outpatient and inpatient consultations. Clinical teaching emphasizes the evaluation and management of common and complex pediatric skin disorders, including atopic dermatitis, neonatal rashes, vascular anomalies, pigmentary disorders, genetic and inflammatory dermatoses, hair and nail disorders in children, pediatric cutaneous infections, and pediatric cutaneous oncology. Students work directly with Stanford pediatric dermatology faculty and multidisciplinary teams to refine skills in pediatric skin examination, age-appropriate communication, and family-centered care. Students will learn to apply growth and developmental considerations to dermatologic disease, interpret pediatric dermatopathology, and integrate evidence-based therapeutic strategies in the care of children and adolescents. Learners are expected to attend Tuesday morning didactic teaching sessions for medical dermatology and weekly dermatology grand rounds on Thursday mornings, and deliver a brief case-based or topic presentation to faculty and peers before the end of the rotation.
