Navigating the News
Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will explore how news is produced, distributed and financially supported, and why a portfolio of skills is essential to being a journalist today. As news outlets are whittled down and impacted by layoffs and corporate management changes, journalists will be expected to hone their skills in different areas and will likely pursue a career that spans traditional and online media, newsletters, live events, podcasting, audience engagement, social media and more. In this course, we will explore the shifting landscape in media economics, the growing trend of independent media, how news consumption is being redefined and how journalists are adapting to meet the needs of consumers today.
