The Language of Homer

Catalog description

An introduction to the early history of the Greek language through intensive close reading of texts (Homer and dialect inscriptions) and study of the development of phonology and morphology through extensive readings in comparative-historical grammar. Attention will be paid to topics in diction and meter. Evaluation based on problem sets, weekly quizzes, two exams, and occasional presentations. Reading knowledge of French and German highly recommended but not required. Undergraduates wishing to enroll should contact the instructor in advance.
