Catalog description

The course aims to help students acquire mastery of Aristophanic Greek so as to make reading his comic plays a pleasure. Regular review using an advanced grammar text will lead to a better grasp of the syntax and morphology of Attic Greek; investigation of text, meter, exegetical traditions and contemporary scholarship will aid appreciation of Aristophanes' artistry; careful analysis of plot, theme, and allusion will provide a wider view of Athenian culture in the late 5th century BC. Classics majors and minors must take course for letter grade. Classics majors and minors may repeat for credit with advance approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Open to graduate students.
