The theory and practice of persuasive speaking as formulated in Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Intensive reading in Greek of two court speeches (Lysias, On the Murder of Eratosthenes; Antiphon, On the Murder of Herodes) with analysis of diction, style, and rhetorical strategies, framed by broad survey in English of relevant texts from Plato, Aristotle, Demosthenes, Isaeus, Isocrates, and Aischines.
