Catalog description

This course seeks to familiarize students with Homeric Greek in order to read Homer's Odyssey at a proficient level. Beginning with a primer in Homeric grammar and meter, we will do a close reading of selected sections from The Odyssey, paired with discussion of the text's unique use of language and the effect of this language on the narrative framework. Cyclopes, Witches, and man-eating monsters will be our guides through Homeric Greek. Classics majors and minors must take course for letter grade. Classics majors and minors may repeat for credit with advance approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Open to graduate students.
