The Ensnared Geographies of US Empire & Latine Migration

Utilizing analytics of Latinx studies, in this course we will disentangle the complex relationship between US Empire and Latine migration. We will examine the rise of the US military industrial complex, the development of US-privileged international trade agreements, and US interventionism in Latin America to think through how these forces have impacted Latine migration to the United States from the 20th century to the present. We will focus on particular historical moments and geographies from across the Americas to unpack these relationships, and to consider how these processes have impacted who has migrated to the US as well as the circumstances migrants have faced when they arrive here.
