The Foundry School: Advanced Manufacturing, Industrial Capability, and the Next Production Era
Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The world industrialized around steam, electricity, petrochemicals, semiconductors, and software. The next industrial era will be shaped by advanced manufacturing: AI-enabled production, robotics, energy systems, programmable materials, biologically engineered production, resilient supply chains, and strategic industrial capacity. Today, "advanced manufacturing" means very different things to different communities. For some, it means additive manufacturing and robotics. For others, semiconductor fabrication, synthetic biology, autonomous systems, energy production, or AI-enabled factories. These communities rarely interact in a systematic way, despite increasingly shaping the same industrial future. A central question for many is whether the future of manufacturing will be dominated by highly autonomous 'dark factories,' or by more adaptive industrial systems that combine AI, robotics, human expertise, and rapid iteration. Different industries may require fundamentally different production models, and understanding those tradeoffs is important to understand. Many institutions throughout the United States teach pieces of this future across engineering, computer science, policy, business, energy, materials science, robotics, and manufacturing programs. Few places, however, can bring together frontier technology, venture creation, industrial practice, national strategy, and global partnerships the way Stanford University and Silicon Valley can. The Foundry School is intended initially as a convening effort: a builder-focused seminar series bringing together students, faculty, founders, industrial operators, policymakers, investors, and allied international partners to examine how the next generation of industrial systems will actually be designed, financed, built, scaled, and sustained. Think Artemis Accords for industrial capability: nations, companies, universities,…
