This course will explore the challenges and opportunities of building human habitats on Mars, integrating cutting-edge research from civil engineering, material science, and space exploration. Students will learn how principles of structural engineering, geotechnical analysis, and sustainable design adapt to extraterrestrial environments. From theoretical concepts to practical design challenges, this course bridges the gap between earthbound engineering and the future of space colonization. Key topics include: Engineering in extreme environments: temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and radiation shielding; Material innovation: using in-situ resources (e.g., regolith) and 3D printing for construction; Design for sustainability and self-sufficiency: energy systems, water recycling, and habitat life cycles; Multi-disciplinary collaboration: civil engineers, architects, and aerospace engineers working together.
