This course introduces the emerging field of neuroimmunology, focusing on how the immune system influences brain health in the contexts of aging and neurodegeneration. Aging is the greatest risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, and nearly half of associated risk genes are immune-related, highlighting the importance of immune mechanisms in brain function and disease. The course combines lectures with interactive journal clubs to explore key topics such as microglia, Alzheimer's disease, and brain aging. Students will engage with foundational and current research, learn about cutting-edge techniques, and discuss ongoing challenges in targeting immune pathways to treat neurodegeneration.
