Catalog description

This 3-week mini course teaches students to develop research questions about electrophysiological signals from the brain and internal organs utilizing human-centered experimental techniques. Throughout the course, students will learn about electrophysiological signals in humans and modalities to measure them; develop (and iterate on) an experimental design to investigate a research question of their choice utilizing these techniques; and learn to evaluate the statistical power and potential sources of noise in their proposed experiment. Topics include electroencephalography (EEG), intracranial EEG, electromyography (EMG), electrocardiography (ECG/EKG), and electrogastrography (EGG). Students will also reflect on how they would lead their own future trainees through the research design process. Target Audience: graduate and post-graduate students of all academic backgrounds are welcome. Prerequisites: Knowledge of introductory physics and statistics, and previous exposure to electrophysiology will be helpful, but not required.
