Stanford University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
This course will examine the long history of the global Black diaspora through the theme of encounters. Beginning with the origins of civilization to Afrofuturist aspirations, we will learn about the material, intellectual, and cultural transformations resulting from the interactions between Black folk and various communities throughout the world. Central to this course will be the question of how the Black diaspora has been central in shaping the world as much as the world has been central in shaping the histories and experiences of the Black diaspora.
