Catalog description

This course examines Zen (Chan) Buddhism through its historical development in China and Japan and its transmission to the United States. Students will explore key practices, philosophy, rituals, poetry, paintings, and music, by engaging with classical texts, modern scholarship, and artworks. The course also incorporates short guided meditations, guest lectures, and a field trip to deepen understanding of Zen practice and its lived traditions.
