Topics in Writing & Rhetoric: Patient-Centered Stories, Research, and Advocacy

Catalog description

In this class, students will explore how patients are reshaping our understanding of medicine, healthcare, and the experience of illness. Although patients have often been cast as simply seeking the knowledge and expertise of a healthcare provider, those with direct experience of an illness also make important contributions - not only by improving our understanding of various diseases and conditions, but also by advocating for and improving healthcare policy and research. As we analyze and discuss examples of such art, advocacy, and research contributions, students will practice engaging in such work, designing a project of their choice that aims to center these lived experiences.
