Catalog description

The Art of Noticing: People and Place is a studio-based documentary photography course grounded in observation, repetition, and relational engagement. Students will develop a sustained photographic project focused on a person, place, or environment over time. Rather than prioritizing technical mastery alone, this course emphasizes attention - how meaning is constructed through proximity, duration, and care. Students will return to the same subjects across weeks, building a body of work that reflects evolving relationships, ethical awareness, and visual intention. The class operates as a working studio: combining lectures, critiques, fieldwork, artist talks, and student presentations. By the end of the quarter, students will produce a cohesive photographic series that will be printed and presented in a public-facing exhibition.
