Catalog description

This course will introduce students to the medium of painting beyond the 2-dimensional conventions of a canvas by employing a directional composition of everyday objects, sound, lens-based practices (photography and video), and mark making. Through studio projects, screenings, readings, local field trips, critiques, and experimentation, this course seeks the potential for the transformative assemblage of available and sought out resources into meaningful visual language. Prior painting experience is not a requirement for this class. Prioritizing dialogue and material exploration, students will be steered towards developing personal and expanded approaches to painting, while gaining adequate exposure to the medium's canonical traditions.
