Women's Health including Prenatal and Gynecologic Care

The Women's Health (Prenatal and Gynecologic Care) Clerkship provides students with an opportunity to focus on health issues specific to women of all ages. This four-week outpatient rotation will introduce students to the depth and breadth of women's health issues including common gynecological problems, routine well-woman visits, and pregnancy from prenatal care through delivery and postpartum. Emphasis is placed on disease prevention and early detection of diseases that affect women. As an active member of the obstetrical and gynecological care team, students will perform histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic testing, formulate patient-centered treatment plans, and counsel patients on contraception and family planning. Additionally, students will be introduced to the principles of surgery related to women's health. They will assist in gynecological surgeries, in-office procedures, and surgeries related to deliveries. For obstetrical patients, students will help develop prenatal plans for uncomplicated and high-risk pregnancies, assist with deliveries, and develop skills to supervise and manage labor and delivery in an emergency situation.The PAEA Women's Health End of Rotation Exam is a required component of PAS 331 and will be held on the last Thursday of the rotation.This course is offered to students enrolled in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program only.
