Catalog description

The Emergency Medicine Clerkship provides students with clinical experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with undifferentiated emergencies and urgencies. The Emergency Department is a unique learning environment with a variety of medical conditions and acuity. Exposure to patients in this setting gives students the opportunity to learn the initial approach and ongoing management of undifferentiated patients. This will take place over one 4-week clerkship experience. The emphasis is placed on students evaluating patients, developing appropriate differential diagnoses, and determining initial management, repeat evaluations and final disposition of these patients. Students will present each case to their preceptors for discussion and participate in management activities and emergency room procedures. By the end of the clerkship, the student should feel comfortable examining almost any patient in the emergency department and should be able to quickly recognize patients with life-threatening conditions that require immediate intervention.The PAEA Emergency Medicine End of Rotation Exam is a required component of PAS 321 and will be held on the last Thursday of the rotation.This course is offered to students enrolled in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program only.
