The Surgery Clerkship provides students with clinical experience in the evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of surgical diseases. Emphasis is placed on teaching students to recognize and manage basic clinical problems that relate to surgery. Students will be involved in pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care. Preoperative management includes patient education and procedures necessary to prepare patients for surgery. Students will perform admitting histories and physical examinations, identify appropriate admitting orders for surgical patients and identify appropriate diagnostic studies required prior to and after surgical procedures. In the operating room setting, students will assist surgeons and have an opportunity to become familiar with protocols and equipment. Students will also participate in post-operative management, such as wound care, pain management, and patient education. The clerkship offers an opportunity for students to integrate their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and physical diagnosis into a treatment plan for patients with surgical conditions. When possible, students attend surgical grand rounds and other surgically-oriented conferences.The PAEA Surgery End of Rotation Exam is a required component of PAS 320 and will be held on the last Thursday of the rotation.This course is offered to students enrolled in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program only.
