Indigeneity and Racial Hierarchy Around the World

Catalog description

This seminar will explore issues of indigeneity and racial hierarchy beginning with the Chilean experience and expanding outward to other Latin American countries and similar cases around the world. We will consider histories of colonialism, ideologies of erasure such as mestizaje and whitening, contemporary concerns related to authenticity and self-determination, as well as ongoing human rights struggles. Students will gain an appreciation for the diversity of Chilean society while attending to the socio-political dynamics of structural inequality and cultural representation.
