This course invites students to explore this rich landscape, decoding depictions of love and sexuality to understand their origins, from courtly love to "free love." Key questions addressed include the influence of historical and cultural habits on modern dating, the social construction of sexuality, the impact of ethnic and social backgrounds on romantic choices, and the evolution of romance before modern dating apps like Tinder. The course also explores contemporary issues such as Rape Culture, the relevance of the "gentleman" concept, and the recognition of nonconforming genders, polyamory, and asexuality. Departing from literary texts (Scudery, Villedieu, Racine), TV shows (Emily in Paris), paintings and films (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), this seminar fosters creativity and debate, developing critical and analytical skills through close reading and conversations. Each session includes an informative segment followed by a salon-like discussion on a "question d'amour." Students will map their own landscapes of love, craft maxims, write portraits (or social media profiles), and engage in collaborative critiques, making this a dazzling exploration of love, sexuality, and identity against France's timeless allure.
